Outdoor Adventure Camp is designed to offer a high
quality educational experience, while at the same time, an exciting
and fun camp experience. Activities during the week will include the
following:
Hunter Education
and Shooting Sports
Campers will learn hands-on about the safe and responsible use of
firearms, shotgun and rifle, while adhering to the highest standards
of safety, sportsmanship, and ethical behavior. In addition they
will gain useful knowledge and skills in the shooting sports, such
as identifying the different components of their equipment,
patterning a shotgun, sighting in a rifle, and shooting
fundamentals.
In conjunction with the camp, the Hunter education
course is offered during the week at no extra charge. Upon
successful completion of this course students will receive their
hunter safety certificate. This is a necessary requirement in most
states for obtaining a hunting license.
Hunting Skills and Safety
Campers will explore the exciting
sport of hunting through activities that teach them stalking and
observational skills, game calling, safe use of climbing stands, how
to recover game, proper camouflage selection, stand/blind
construction and placement, and safety. Campers will then be able to
test their acquired knowledge on a hunter skills trail.
Night Hikes and Campfires
Discover what goes on outside
after the sun goes down as you are led on a hike through the
prairie. Because no camp setting is complete without a campfire,
another night activity will include the entire camp coming together
to tell stories, and reflect on the things they have learned.

Wildlife Management
Campers will have access to over
1000 acres of intensely managed, wildlife rich land where they will
learn firsthand the effects of many wildlife management practices
and plant succession on wildlife. In addition, they will learn how
to identify common wildlife foods, along with the waterfowl and
upland game species that inhabit the prairie. They will also visit
Sand Lake National Wildlife Refuge near Columbia, SD which is home
to more than 266 species of birds, 40 mammal species, and a variety
of fish, reptiles, and amphibians. The Refuge is a mosaic of
wildlife and the wild places they need. They will participate in a
hands-on project with National Wildlife Refuge Staff.
Fishing
Campers will participate in a
fishing excursion to the prairie lakes that have formed in the
coteaus, where abundant numbers of northern pike, walleye, and perch
are found. They will learn how to clean their catch and cook it for
supper.
